What is RAID?

Think of RAID as arranging several workers to carry the same business load. Depending on the arrangement, the team may work faster or continue when one worker is absent. However, if the instructions are wrong or the documents are destroyed, the whole team can still fail. That is why RAID and backup solve different problems.

The Technical Explanation

RAID combines several drives so a server can improve performance, usable capacity or tolerance of a drive failure. RAID controllers use striping, mirroring, and parity across multiple drives to achieve this.

Business Impact

RAID is not a backup. If files are deleted, encrypted or corrupted, the same problem may affect the RAID array.

Can RAID prevent downtime?

It can reduce downtime from certain drive failures, but it cannot protect against every hardware fault, ransomware, deletion, corruption or site disaster.

Is RAID 5 safe for every server?

No. Suitability depends on drive size, workload, rebuild time, controller design and the business impact of a second failure.

Do I still need backup with RAID 10?

Yes. RAID 10 provides drive fault tolerance and performance, not independent historical recovery.
